Charleston, SC

Mike Summers - June 2017:

Frontier will start flying to Charleston from Denver in February 2018. Charleston has been exporting its culture for quite a long time. Based on our experiences you might try one of the many "Only in Charleston" souvenir shops. Head over to the Charleston City Market (website:
http://www.thecharlestoncitymarket.com/ ). Meet the locals, shop for neat souvenirs, take a tour, and enjoy the local cuisine. At the Market you can meet the craftswomen and craftsmen. When you see the "Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston" seal, you know that you have great stuff. Two of our favorites are Croghan's Jewel Box (website: https://www.croghansjewelbox.com/ ) and Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets (website:
http://www.thecharlestoncitymarket.com/main/sweetgrass-baskets ). Check out the other popular vendors at the Market. Another good area to visit is Cannon and King Streets, which are Charleston's Madison Avenue (website: https://www.charlestonsfinest.com/sc/exclusking.htm ). If you have time, visit some of Charleston's many Plantations (website: http://www.10best.com/destinations/south-carolina/charleston/attractions/plantations/ ). If you only have time for one plantation, go to the McLeod Plantation Historic Site (website: https://www.ccprc.com/1447/McLeod-Plantation-Historic-Site ) with its unique perspective on slavery and the struggle for land rights before, during, and after the Civil War. Plan on two hours to take the tour and visit the grounds. Another place to visit is Fritz Porter (website: http://fritzporter.com/ ), a design collective featuring antiques and contemporary art. Two other sites nearby include Fort Sumter (website: https://www.nps.gov/fosu/planyourvisit/fortsumtertickets.htm ) and the USS Yorktown (website:
https://www.patriotspoint.org/ ). When it comes to food, Charleston is top heavy with many good places to dine. We liked Rodney Scott's BBQ (website: http://www.rodneyscottsbbq.com/ ); his excellent BBQ is reasonably priced and delicious. Goat Sheep Cow, North (website: https://goatsheepcow.com/ ) is a yummy cheese shop that doubles as a wine bar. Leon's Oyster Shop (website: http://leonsoystershop.com/ ) in a former car body shop is a destination for fried chicken and fresh oysters. Xiao Bao Biscuit (website: http://xiaobaobiscuit.com/ ) serves up "Asian Soul Food" in a casual setting. For drinks, give one of these a try: South Sea Oasis (website: https://www.facebook.com/southseasoasis/ ) serves tiki cocktails and pupu platters in a fun atmosphere with happy hour from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Or try Proof (website: www.charlestonproof.com/ ) with it's complete menu of over 30 cocktails. Lastly, try a local brewery called Edmund's Oast (website: http://edmundsoast.com/ )with its house beers and snacks.

Enjoy Charleston!
